About Gold Rush
Gold Rush is a strategy game where students answer vocabulary questions to earn keys, then use those keys to open treasure chests scattered across a mine map. But they are not alone -- an AI prospector is racing to open chests too. Students must balance speed with accuracy and make strategic decisions about which chests to pursue.
The competitive element of racing against an AI opponent adds urgency without the social pressure of competing against classmates. The AI prospector moves at a pace calibrated to the student's grade level, staying close enough to create tension but not so fast that it feels unfair. Students who answer quickly and accurately will pull ahead; those who rush and make mistakes will fall behind.
Each treasure chest contains different rewards: gold nuggets (points), vocabulary bonus cards (hints for future questions), or occasionally a "cave-in" that costs points. The strategic element comes from choosing which chests to open. Larger chests require more keys but have better rewards, while smaller chests are quicker to open but less valuable. Students must read the map and make decisions about risk versus reward.
Vocabulary questions serve as the key-earning mechanism. Each correct answer earns one key. Streak bonuses (3 or more correct in a row) earn bonus keys. The questions cover the full range of vocabulary from the assigned jam, mixing simple recall with more complex application questions.
Gold Rush includes a persistent map that reveals more of the mine as students progress through multiple sessions. This long-term progression encourages repeated play and sustained engagement with the vocabulary over days or weeks rather than a single session. Teachers can see each student's map progress in the dashboard.
The game is particularly effective for students who enjoy adventure and exploration themes. The mine setting, treasure hunting narrative, and AI competitor create a rich game world that makes vocabulary practice feel like an adventure rather than schoolwork.
